By 31 August I'd written 10,032 words and now I've finished my book

Karen's 10,000 words Book Challenge came at the perfect time for me.

I so enjoyed her pre-work - the insightful questions and tips; the facebook group really helped me be accountable and the regular webinars had lots of really useful tips.

The proof is in the pudding. By 31st August I had written 10,032 words and now I've published my book! Thank you Karen.

What are you waiting for? Grab your place now!

Don’t let another month slip by where you talk about your dream – let’s work together and make it happen.

If you're wondering why we've chosen August for this challenge, we find that for many business owners this is a quieter month. Although you might have a holiday booked and kids to look after, this is the ideal time to get started with your book.

As the typical business book is around 50,000 words, at the end of the challenge, you'll be well on the way to getting your book done, with new habits that'll get you there!

If you wonder how you can achieve 10,000 words, here's my experience. It takes me around an hour to write 1,000 draft and unedited words, and even if you take twice this long, you just need 20 hours during August to dedicate to your book. And what happens if you only get 5,000 words on paper, at least that's 5,000 more words than you have now! Oh and I've got a few hints and tips that will give you some shortcuts too...

Is it time to move from writing a book "one day" to writing it this month?

The sooner you join, the sooner you get access to the community and the resources.  For just £197 (£97 early bird when you sign up before 13 July), you'll get the motivation and support that you need to focus on the next steps for your book and the confidence to make it happen.

The energy and encouragement of this group over the last three years has been amazing and it has been lovely to see our authors flourish, as you can see from the testimonials on this page. Something like a book – your book - has got to start somewhere and this is the perfect opportunity to get going. You'll get access to me for a fraction of my normal fees, and I can't wait to help you to get really amazing results.

Your book is the hook that will build your business. You will understand what makes you different and you will be able to stand out and do more of what you love.

  • You can attract clients – rather than chasing them.
  • You can find marketing and selling easier with clarity of purpose and message.
  • You can have more fun and be more in flow.

I do hope you join myself and Sheryl on the challenge!

Best wishes

I went from feeling stuck and procrastinating to writing over 60,000 words in the month!

Your 10k book challenge was the catalyst in terms of helping me to structure my book. I got my focus back, I got clarity and above all else I got my motivation back to complete what I started. With your help and support and the amazing people in the Facebook group, I went from a standing start to 60,000 words by the end of the challenge. It was the kick start I needed for my book.

Having interviewed around 20 people for my Portfolio Careers book and had dozens of pages of excellent and inspirational transcriptions, the enormity of working through these to create compelling content for readers became an obstacle I could not seem to overcome. Procrastination then held me back.

By signing up to your August book challenge, it gave me the focus, sense of purpose and motivation to make my breakthrough. The videos were excellent and many helped to refresh my memory on things I had done before for previous book that I overlooked, such as copying and pasting content from blogs, my audio book, interviews with with me etc. Also to find themes from the interview transcriptions and use the post-it note exercise to create some potential chapters. This was invaluable.

The Facebook group support and webinars have all been helpful and helped to build momentum and motivation to make my breakthrough. The the end of the challenge I had written around 60k words and almost completed my initial draft! Thank you Karen for providing the framework to make this happen.

I'm focused on the subjects for my next books!

The 10,000 Word Summer Book Challenge really made me focus on the subjects available for my next books. Although I probably only wrote 6,000 words in total, they were worth their weight in gold as I was able to plan workshops, ideas for books 2 and 3, and to discuss marketing and a book launch. I will be using all this information to help me launch my current book.

This is what people have said about our previous challenges

Get a great support team cheering you on with your book

I really enjoyed doing Karen’s 10,000 word challenge last summer. I’d planned to take the month out to write my book anyway, but being someone who is easily distracted, I knew it was going to be tough to stay on track during the month. Plus I know I enjoy recognition for my efforts, and with a book that all comes at the end once it’s published. The process of writing the book itself can be quite a solitary experience, and I was aware that this could actually sap my energy rather than fuel it. So I was delighted to be invited to join the challenge just at the very same time I was gearing up to knuckle down.

And it was exactly what I needed. The framework reminded me what I was working towards, and gave me ideas to stay motivated. But best of all I loved the camaraderie of the other writers in the Facebook group, all working on different things but all working together. There was a tiny bit of competitive spirit, but mostly it was one of collaborative about support and about cheering each other on. That was fantastic. It was just so lovely to announce I’d managed 3,000 words that day or whatever the word count was, and feel I was telling people who really cared and who understood exactly what that meant to me.

I have stayed in touch with many of the other participants in the challenge and I know we will continue to support each other in our writing careers. We will also cheer loudly for each other when our books are published. Having the challenge made writing more fun and more productive and I’d thoroughly recommend it to anyone - beginner or experienced writer. For your first book or for your 50th.

I've completed my book and can't wait to tackle my next

Taking part in the 10,000 Word Summer Book Challenge has been motivating and supportive. Karen's depth of experience and her expertise shine through, while at the same time I was able to feel that no question was too simple to ask. The group were a great support for each other and I know that we will keep in touch. I have completed my book, and can't wait to tackle my next book idea. Highly recommended.

I had a wonderful sense of accomplishment at the end

When I started the challenge, I didn't have a clue what I was going to write about. I simply knew that I wanted to write something. Committing myself to write 10,000 words was just what I needed to prove that I could do it.

I just wrote and found the process acted as an amazing content provider as lots of ideas came up. I ended up with a plan for a business book that I could write as well as some content for a book about my life in Spain. Most of all, I found the challenge thoroughly enjoyable.

Once I had set myself the challenge and was officially in the group, I felt that I couldn't let either myself or the group down, so it really encouraged me to keep going. It was great to read what everyone else was doing too. I learnt a lot about prioritising my writing and had a wonderful feeling of accomplishment at the end. Thanks, Karen!

I wrote 18,000 words and then published my book!

Karen’s 10,000 word challenge was just the incentive I needed to get started on writing my book – Confident Business Writing. The advice she gave via the webinars was extremely helpful and gave vital encouragement throughout the process.

The challenge helped me to get into the habit of writing every day and create a robust plan which enabled me to write over 18,000 words in the month. I also gained valuable knowledge of the publishing process, and the book has given me enhanced credibility as a writer and proofreader.

I wish I hadn't procrastinated for so long! I'd advise all would-be authors to get on and do it! It's a hugely satisfying thing to do and to see your name on the front cover as the author is reward for all the hard work.

Subsequently, I’ve been part of Karen’s Author’s Journey and have attended a number of her events which I’ve found very valuable in the post-publication process.

I seriously recommend the book writing challenge

I seriously recommend the book writing challenge, even if you are just thinking that you need to start writing a blog or newsletter, let alone a book. Karen’s opening question ‘what do you want to be known for?’ was the challenge of the challenge for me and started a significant period of really working out the direction for my business.

As a result, I have more focus and vision for my business and this has definitely been a key to some successes this year.

Karen is always on hand and is very active in the group, so you get her advice and great tips for writing every day which will really build your confidence and make the whole idea of writing a book more approachable.

It is such great value, I would find it hard to understand why anyone wouldn’t want to do it!

Thank you Karen for nudging me along!

Writing a book has been at the back of my mind for a while now. Karen knew this and every so often, when we either bumped into each other or were in contact, she would simply ask 'and how's that book coming along Rachel?'

I then needed to hear about the value of having a business book from other sources as well, until eventually this year's challenge came at the right time for me to get going.

Having waited so long to get started, I was determined to meet the challenge and beyond - and did it! I set my own personal challenge of 15,000 words - 1,000 words for each day that I was working in August - and did them. Thank you Karen for continuing to nudge me along.
