How to create perfect book content

If you’ve ever wondered how to put your book content together, I’d like you to consider this…

Imagine you were just going to paint a room in your house.

Would you get out a paint brush, get the paint pot out of the shed and paint the walls?

Probably not.

But in your mind, you were just going to paint the walls.

First, you’d probably clear the room in which you were painting.

Then you might fill in any holes.

Sand down the woodwork.

Tape over the skirting boards and protect the floor and ceiling.

Check the paint you’ve got is still good. Or perhaps try out some new colours first if you fancy a change.

Clean your brushes or buy new ones.

Wash the walls ready to go.

Then you might be ready to just paint your walls.

The thing about deciding what to write about in a book is that many people forget what they do just before the thing they do well.

You know… The stuff that you find easy that has taken you decades to understand.

The things you struggled with before you realised what worked.

The disappointments, the challenges and the despair.

The learnings and lessons.

The courage and the resilience that you’ve shown.

All of this needs to go in your book.

This metaphor was developed whilst chatting with my friend and colleague, Sheryl Andrews, as I’ve been supporting her with her second book. Having written the book, she created an accompanying course, which made her realise everything she did before the just.

It’s something I talk about in week four of the ‘Smart Author System‘.
