Interview with Sarah Hamilton-Gill, author of Leap into HR Consulting
50 new HR bootcamp clients AND a new book!
In February 2020, Sarah Hamilton-Gill came to me for help to get her book written and published.
She’d started writing her book in 2018, when she attended a book-related training course. But two years later, she was stuck at 18,000 words and wasn’t making any progress. She was struggling to get clarity of her message and finding that she wasn’t a natural writer.
Frustrated by her lack of progress, she sought book mentoring support. And was introduced to me. She started by attending Make It Happen days to get clarity in her message and to build the momentum with her book.
When I launched the Smart Author System in April, she was one of the first people to sign up. By that time, COVID-19 had resulted in her losing one of her main sources of income overnight, so she realised that she couldn’t faff around anymore.
You see, Sarah had identified a gap in the market, and she was worried that someone else would get in there first, before her book was written.
And because she was struggling with getting on with her book, she knew that she needed a proven system to follow.
My interview with Sarah
In a recent interview, Sarah told me how the six-week Smart Author System programme guided her through the process. Although she actually binge-watched all the videos in one go! This prompted her to revisit the structure for her book, prioritise time for writing, and within a few months she had reached the first draft of her book.
Sarah had her one-hour call with me in August as part of the programme, and two days later, she started working with me on a 121 basis, because she knew she needed a some personalised support.
We worked together over three months to help her to develop her content, refine her writing and to get her to the end point of a final draft that she was proud of, ready to be published.
Plus, we worked on her marketing and launch plan, and she had 128 people sign up for priority notification of her book launch when she set up a page on her website to pre-sell her book.
Then I passed her onto the rest of the team to edit, design and publish her book. And I was delighted when her book was launched last month!
Sarah’s success so far…

Upon launch, her book was a hot new release on Amazon and now has 22 five-star reviews. People are also loving the full colour special edition of her book, which she sells via her website.
Alongside deciding to write her book in March, Sarah launched her online bootcamp, which mirrors the content in the book, although very much bespoke to her attendees. To date, she has supported 50 businesses through the bootcamp, which sells at £1,000. This is making an incredible impact during a challenging year.
Plus it’s a great example of how to write a self-funding book, and proves the value of developing a programme and writing a book at the same time!
Sarah has already been recognised as an expert in her field. Since the launch, she has attracted a lot of PR in local magazines. She has been invited to be a guest blogger for the HR Director magazine, and she is currently exploring opportunities that she wouldn’t have had otherwise.
In her own words, “It has made life easier. People have seen the book, read the book and love the book, and then they want help to the next level.”

Here are Sarah Hamilton-Gill’s top three pieces of advice
1. Stop what you’re doing. Invest in yourself rather than ‘giving it a go’ before you get help, as otherwise your time and energy will go to waste. Working with an expert will get you there faster if you want your book to be a good quality product. Why go around the house trying to do it by yourself, when you don’t need to?
2. Put time in the diary on a consistent basis. Otherwise, before you know it another three months have gone by and you’ve not written anything. You have to find out what works for you to get in the zone and create flow in your writing. Sarah set aside a chunk of three months to do this whilst in her home in Corfu.
3. Be realistic when it comes to publishing times. Although Sarah wanted her book out much earlier this year, to create a high-quality product, she quickly found out that it would take longer than she’d hoped. But we did set some challenging deadlines, which she met, and she is delighted with the high standard and end result.
