How to recoup your book investment
Writing a book is never just about writing a book when I work with my clients. It’s all about writing the book that’s going to get you the best results.
Let me give you an example. In 2020, I worked with Sarah Hamilton-Gill. I mentioned Sarah in my recent video training, ‘15 Ways you can Grow your Business by Writing a Book’ and in my latest book, The 7 Shifts.
Sarah is the author of Leap into HR Consulting, which launched in November 2020. I caught up with her a couple of weeks ago to find out the difference that her book has made to her business.
How to recoup your book investment
Sarah's book has had 78 reviews to date and led her to being a finalist in the Business Book Awards in 2021. And impressively, she has also generated £15k of income directly from her book. This is in terms of book sales (£5k) and people who have read her book and become clients as a result (£10k).
And those figures don’t take into account those who have found out about her work because she is showing up in a bigger way and differentiating herself from her competitors. As it can be hard to measure results through connections, social media and other activities.
Plus, it doesn’t take into account the clients whose lives she has enriched by providing them with a book that they can work through alongside working with her.
And the end hasn’t happened yet. We were talking about how her book has opened up markets in the US and India, and she has exciting plans on the horizon for the autumn.
Sarah has the perfect business model. Someone buys her book, signs up for her bootcamp and then they have the confidence and the skills to leave the corporate world and become a successful self-employed HR consultant. Win win all around!
When you are investing in your book, whether it’s your time and/or using a book mentor, then you probably want to know how you are going to recoup your investment. And that’s why, when I work with clients, it’s never just about the book!
