What Does a Book Mentor Do? (And Do You Need One?)

Someone recently reached out to ask if I could recommend an editor. She’d written her book – or so she thought – but deep down, she wasn’t sure it flowed well, whether the message was clear, or if it would land with her ideal reader.

As I listened, it was obvious that editing wasn’t the missing piece. What she really needed was someone to help her shape the book before it was written. To help her to clarify the purpose, the audience, and the structure from the start.

In all honesty, I wish she’d found me earlier. It would have saved her time, confusion, and a whole lot of rewriting.

That’s why I’m writing this.

Because you’ve probably heard of editors and ghostwriters. But a book mentor… that might be less familiar.

So What Does a Book Mentor Actually Do?

A book mentor isn’t there to fix your grammar or write your content for you. We don’t take your manuscript and polish it. And we don’t start from a blank page on your behalf.

What we do is help you write the right book – the one that aligns with your message, your audience, and your business.

From defining your big idea, to shaping your structure, refining your voice, and keeping you accountable along the way, book mentoring is about giving you the thinking space, clarity and support to do this properly.

So if you're wondering whether a book mentor is the missing link in your writing journey, here’s what we actually do, how to know if it’s the right kind of support for you, and how to find the right book mentor for you.

A Book Mentor Helps You Write the Right Book

The right book isn’t just one you can write. It’s the one you should write – based on your expertise, goals, and market.

A good mentor doesn’t just cheer you on or give vague advice. They challenge your assumptions. They help you focus. They ask the awkward questions that turn a fuzzy idea into a clear, compelling concept.

You walk away with a roadmap – structure, flow, voice, audience – and the momentum to actually get it done.

You’re Not Just Getting a Coach

Book mentors bring a blend of coaching, strategic thinking, editorial feedback – and publishing know-how. Or at least the good ones do. Although, in my case, you're also getting a qualified coach and NLP Master Practitioner. So expect powerful questions, mindset support and the occasional lovingly-delivered kick up the bum!

Whether you’re at ideas stage or polishing your final draft, they’ll help you:

  • Get clear on what your book is really about
  • Define your reader and your goals
  • Structure the book so it flows logically and reads well
  • Develop and refine your manuscript with feedback and useful insights
  • Keep going when motivation drops (because it will)
  • Prepare for publishing, marketing, and launch with confidence

It’s about the book, yes – but it’s also about who you become through the writing.

Do You Need a Book Mentor?

You probably do if:

  • You’ve been sitting on an idea for months (or years) – or worse still multiple ideas and they are all vying for attention
  • You’re unclear on your message or what kind of book you’re really writing
  • You keep starting, stopping, doubting, or feeling overwhelmed or stuck
  • You’ve written a ton of words but you’re not sure ones to keep, which ones to ditch, and where to take your manuscript next
  • You know you need accountability and support to start or finish
  • You want your book to do more than just exist – you want it to open doors and grow your business further

You might not need a book mentor if:

  • You’ve worked with a book coach before and just need editing support
  • You’re working with a publisher who is guiding you through the process
  • You’re hiring a ghostwriter to write it for you

How to Choose the Right Book Mentor

This part’s crucial – because not all book mentors are created equal.

Here’s what to look for:

Real experience – Have they written books themselves? (I’ve written 10 – so I understand the highs and lows of the process and the different types of books you could write.)

Business insight – Do they understand how a book fits into a bigger ecosystem? (Before specialising in book mentoring, I worked as a business coach. So I get how your book supports your broader goals.)

Strategic thinking – Can they help you position your book to stand out? (It’s one of my favourite things – and I’ve even written a whole book about it.)

Practical support – Do they give feedback on content, structure, and clarity? (From chapter outlines to messy drafts, I help shape your ideas into something powerful – and publishable.)

Proven track record – Have they worked with people like you with goals like yours (I’ve worked with over 100 authors in the last 11+ years so I probably have!)

A good vibe – Do they get you and how you work? (This is personal. You want someone who’ll support you, challenge you, and genuinely care about you and your book.)

You want someone who’ll tell you the truth, challenge your thinking, and support you through the tough bits.

What My Clients Say

Don’t just take my word for it. Here’s what some of my brilliant clients have said about the impact book mentoring had on their journey:

There is no way that I could have written my book without Karen and her Smart Author – Fast Track programme. On my own, I wouldn’t have written my book and I wouldn’t have become an Amazon bestseller.” – Joanna Gaudoin, trainer, speaker and author of Getting On: Making work work

“Without Karen, my book would still be a wish. I’d been fiddle-farting around for years – now I’ve published, launching a course, and planning the next three!” – Paul Flint, Science Tutor and author of The Exam Slayer

“Karen’s insight, support and strategic thinking helped me shape my book from start to finish.” – Rachel Bennett, Workplace Culture Consultant and author of Shadow Cultures

“Karen challenged me to step out of my comfort zone – and grow into the author I wanted to become.” – Zana Goic Petricevic, coach, trainer and author of Bold Reinvented and Leading on the Edge

“Karen didn’t just help me shape my ideas – she helped me believe in them. Her guidance gave me the structure, clarity and confidence to turn a jumble of thoughts into a book I’m proud of.” – Hayley Paterson, payroll expert and author of The Value of Payroll

“Doors are opening already – invitations to speak, collaborate and join new projects – all because of the book I’ve published.” – Saar Ben Attar, business founder and author of Challengers

“Karen gave me the structure, support and confidence I didn’t know I needed. It helped me stop doubting and start writing – with purpose, clarity and a plan that actually worked.” – Lorraine Senior, reflexologist, trainer, and author of Reflexology for Schools

“Writing the book was just the beginning. Thanks Karen, we’re already seeing spin-off benefits – from clearer messaging to new opportunities for growth. It’s become a powerful business tool.” Kevin Brent, business founder and author of The Entrepreneurial Scale-Up System

The Bottom Line?

If you’re serious about writing a nonfiction book that works – for your readers and your business – a book mentor could be the secret weapon you didn’t know you needed.

And honestly? The earlier you get support, the easier the whole process becomes. Don’t wait until you’re stuck, spinning in circles, or reworking thousands of words.
