What do you enjoy most about your work?

5 chairs enjoy work‘What do you enjoy most about your work?’

This was a question that I was asked by Louise Evans last week. I was in Florence for her book launch party. She asked me the question when we met for dinner a couple of days before to discuss her event.

As Louise’s book mentor, I’ve supported her to write 5 Chairs 5 Choices. A leadership trainer and coach, Louise works with organisations in Italy and internationally. Her book showcases her ‘5 Chairs’ process which helps people to master their communication, own their behaviours, and gives them the tools to manage the behaviours of others.

Anyway back to the question: ‘What do you enjoy most about your work?’ That was a hard question to answer, as I love what I do. I’ve been in business for 10 years this month – which is a bit scary – and my business has changed a lot over that period.

I started out as a career coach in November 2006. With a background in human resources, this was the perfect niche at the time. My foray into coaching started when I wanted to change my job. I found a coach who supported me to do this, then I trained as a coach, and later did my NLP Master Practitioner qualification.

Later I transitioned into supporting new coaches in businesses after the publication of my first book, which elevated my business. Then in 2014 this morphed into supporting my clients primarily with their books. It had never been my plan, but by then I had written and published my own books. I’d developed a lot of knowledge and experience, and had a process that worked. I had also supported many of my clients who wrote their books during the time whilst I coached them. I knew that writing a book was a great way to stand out, and I wanted to support more people embarking on this journey.

So, what do I enjoy most about my work?

pisa enjoy workGoing back to the question, I love the fact that I can travel around the world and blend work and play. Book launches have taken me to Scotland and Italy this year. My writing retreats have led me to Spain for the third time. Plans are already afoot for next year, which includes a trip to the Caribbean, as well as more client book launches in the pipeline.

Seeing my clients get results is something I love. This can be anything from getting unstuck when they’re struggling with something, to a light bulb moment when they have a new realisation.

I love the transformations that people get when they decide to write their books. They usually get much more than finishing the book that changes theirs (and other peoples) lives. I can recount two perfect examples from our retreat in September. One lady found that telling her story unblocked some things that had been holding her back. Another developed new transformational habits as a result of making the time to create space for her writing.

Of course, I love the end result of writing a book. Having your book in your hand is an emotional and life changing moment. I enjoy it when my clients see the results of their hard work. There’s something special about helping others to turn their dreams into reality!

This was one of the reasons why I was delighted to be with Louise last week. At her book launch, she said “It was worth writing my book just for this”. Surrounded by her friends, colleagues and family, it was a true celebration and thank you. I now can’t wait to help her to make the most of the book that she has written. I’m looking forward to seeing it reach those who need to read it, and for it to develop and grow her business.
