How to face your book writing hurdles
David recently hit his first big obstacle with his book writing project.
On track with his timetable, he’d made a good start with the writing. But when he started to read it back, he became demoralised.
He told me it was like he was in a 400-metre hurdle race and he’d just smacked the first hurdle. Really hard.
That’s why he asked for advice. Because when there are nine more hurdles to clear, it’s important to know what to do next!
David and I explored his metaphor. I gave him feedback on a piece he’d already written, and we modelled what was working already.
We focused on how he could strengthen his writing ability and deepen his knowledge on a subject that he knows a lot about already!
And we set next steps that would give him tangible progress.
Overcoming book writing hurdles
Whether you’re running the 400-metre hurdles or writing a book, having a coach and mentor, where you have regular accountability and support, is invaluable.
You’ll get help to strengthen the right muscles, so that you can become more powerful. The more progress you make, the easier it will be to get to the finish line. And we may fine-tune your training as you go through the process.
It’s unlikely to be your first race (or piece of writing), so rather than compare yourself to others alongside you, we will reflect on what does work and do more of the things that fuel you.
