How to own it!

I was recently giving a client some feedback on her book. It was a lovely piece of writing and over the months, she’s really found her voice. There was one key piece of advice I had for her and that was to own it!

In my last blog post, I was talking about what it takes to become an authority, and this is a perfect example.

When you’re writing a book to position you as an expert, you need to know your stuff.

You’ve probably had years of experience in your field.

You may have been talking to other experts, listening to podcasts, watching videos and doing research around your topic.

You’ve probably got lots of client stories you can share and examples you can use to illustrate important points.

I’m sure you’ve also worked on what makes your book different to ensure that it stands out.

It’s great having a clear message, but you need to say it in the right way.

And that’s what I mean by owning it.

Don’t be fluffy with the way you say something.

If you want to make a point, make it.

Assert your point using the I pronoun rather than ‘we’ and ‘our’ when you have something important to say.

Your reader wants to know your opinion, so don’t be afraid to give it.

They also want to know that you’re human. None of us get it right all the time, and actually being vulnerable and telling your story will reassure your reader that they are not alone.

This is one of the key differences between being an author and becoming an authority that I mention in my new book.

Your reader wants you to inspire them, lead them and show them how it’s done.

One of the things I’ve loved about writing my new book is sharing dozens of examples of how clients have owned it, leading to amazing successes, like being a business award finalist, TEDx speakers, running sell-out programmes and retreats, an interview on Woman’s Hour, worldwide publicity, and so much more.

They ARE owning it. Are you?

Are you owning it?

Please leave your comments on the blog and if we can help you to own it, then please get in touch and let’s chat about how we can help with your book.
