Are you ready to invest in your book?

If you book a call with me to chat about your book, one question I’d ask you is this: Are you ready to invest in your book?

With any book, there is an investment.

There’s the time you need to write it.

Even if you get a publishing deal, you’ll be investing time in your book by squirreling yourself away to write it.

You’ll have to temporarily take your focus off your business, your family, or your friends (or perhaps all three!), which will have an impact on you and everyone around you.

And you might want to get help from someone like me to help you to shape your ideas and to write it. So there will be a financial investment.

But I’m sure that you wish for the process to be as quick and as easy as possible. And you want your book to be the best it can be, which is how I can help.

Why invest in your book?

There are many advantages of having someone like me by your side as your book mentor.

Most people struggle at the start point. That’s why getting help at this stage will save you time in the longrun. It’s great to have a sounding board, and work with someone who understands the process. They can help you to make sense of what you’re writing and why.

A book is easier to write when you know what you’re writing, and in which order you’re writing it. That’s why I often spend a day with a client to help with the preparation and planning.

And as you start writing, having feedback is invaluable. You can gauge whether you’re on the right track and get tips to make it even better. No one wants to waste thousands of words that never make the final cut.

If you get stuck, you have somewhere to go. Rather than losing a day staring at a blank page or getting frustrated, you have someone to talk to about your ideas. With clients, I know a call with me is likely to give them the motivation they need to get some words written!

You can also make sure that your book firmly cements your credibility. There’s a huge difference between writing A book and writing an AUTHORITY book. Plus, there are lots of things you can do to raise your profile alongside writing it.

Recouping your investment

If you invest in getting help with your book, it’s important that you know how you’re going to recoup this investment.

A few years ago, I had a conversation with a client who enquired about my book mentoring and publishing services. She crunched the figures and worked out how many clients she needed to attract to recoup her investment. She quickly realised the value of having a book mentor and signed up to work with me.  Her book was published last year and it’s already raising her profile.

In reality, very few authors recoup their investment in time or money by relying on royalties alone. I’ve been doing some research into this topic this month, as I’ve been asked to speak about this at the ALLi Self-Publishing Advice Conference in the Spring.

Last week, I had a chat with Emma Heptonstall, a former client who’s agreed to be a case study for this talk. She told me how her book helps her to convert prospective clients. Most have read her book and trust her before enquiring about her services, so they’re ready to get started.

Her book has given her confidence in her expertise, which means that she is confident in her pricing. Plus, she now offers multiple ways people can access her services if they can’t afford the one-to-one investment, including an event, online programme and membership site. She can serve more people and make a bigger difference.

She said to me “being a published author means that people take notice of you”. Publicity from her launch in 2017 meant that was featured all around the world, and she’s regularly asked to do podcast interviews. The respect she’s had from other professionals enable her to reach more people with her book.

And, she has a brilliant product that she can sell or give away to those who need her help. In our call, she said “it goes out into the world and you don’t know where it might end up”.

Is it worth investing in your book?

It’s important to acknowledge that writing a book is an investment. But it’s a valuable tool when done well.

And equally if you produce something that doesn’t hit the mark, this will be a waste of your time and energy. That’s why I support business owners to write their best possible books, and they invest in their book to make it happen.

If I can help you to write your authority building book, please get in touch and let’s chat. You can book time in my diary here.
