Interview with Kate Barrett, author of E-telligence

Kate Barrett sold 400 copies of E-telligence BEFORE she'd even published. That's great going! To date, she's sold just under 1000 books. And she only launched it a few months ago.

So what was her secret?

I recently interviewed Kate about this business-changing strategy. Kate is founder of eFocus Marketing and The Email Marketing Academy, providing specialist email marketing consultancy, management and training services to companies around the world. Her new book is E-telligence: Email marketing isn’t dead, the way you’re using it is, published through Librotas Books.

Kate was inspired to write her book because it was the only way she could help more people and change the way they use email marketing in their business. She also realised that it was a great way to solidify her reputation, get her name out there and use her book as a brilliant lead generation tool.

The success of Kate's book was down to her strategic focus right from the start of our first day working together, where she decided to get sponsors involved in the book. This meant that she was able to recoup her investment early on and she is having a very successful launch.

On the day that I interviewed Kate, one of these sponsors hosted a webinar with her. This meant that 500 more people got to know her and her book. And - not surprisingly - there's 500 more people on her mailing list who she can help! In our interview, Kate talks through the process of getting these sponsors on board and how it's been win win for everyone involved.

Top tips for authors

Here are Kate's top tips for writing and publishing a book.

  • In the interview, Kate told me how she struggles with writing and how it can be tough sat in front of a blank piece of paper. What was critical was the planning day with me and she recommends brain-dumping everything on a page before you get started. You can edit later.
  • She said to me "Understand your audience and know what they want from your book and then deliver it".
  • Kate found it best to work in big chunks of time to write her book. Blocking a day at a time or going away to write are good solutions.
  • She also says if you're thinking about writing, stop thinking about it and just do it!
  • Lastly, one of the key successes for Kate was using her network to help promote her book and to buy copies, so she'd highly recommend this approach!
