How to make money from a book
I often find that coaches and other experts have a dilemma.
They want to write a book AND create a course.
Do they write their book before their course OR create their course before writing their book?
It’s a dilemma because they know that it’s tough to make money from a book. The course can make money more quickly.
If they create the course, the book goes on the backburner.
But writing the book first will help sell the course, as it will reach more people…
Now, I don’t believe it needs to be an either/or situation. I believe it can be a BOTH.
YES, you can create a course and write a book at the same time.
Before you look at me in disbelief, I’d like to tell you about Sarah Hamilton-Gill, author of the upcoming book, Leap into HR Consulting.
Sarah started attending some of the Make It Happen days earlier this year. Then she jumped at the chance to sign up for the pilot of the Smart Author System.
We had our one-to-one mentoring session (included as part of the programme) last week, and she was telling me everything she has achieved since she signed up.
Earlier this year, when we connected, Sarah had already started writing her book.
She had been stuck for 12 months. I started to help her to get clear on her structure, the flow in her book and what she was writing.
But when she started to get going again, Covid-19 hit. She lost her main client overnight.
One of the things that I teach on the Smart Author System is how to self-fund your book. There are seven things you can do as you write your book and creating a programme or course is one of them. This means that you can raise your profile and bring in an income at the same time as writing it.
When Sarah was in this situation earlier this year, she used the content she’d created for her book to launch her six-week Bootcamp. And in her recent fourth intake, the bootcamp was full and she’s already planning a fifth.
Writing a book and creating a course together
Sarah was telling me last week how creating the book and the programme together has worked for her.
I always advise clients to keep things simple, so it may not surprise you that the content in her book and the programme is similar, following her four-part methodology.
Although the book has been a little bit on the back burner as she launched her bootcamp, she has all the content she needs to write it quickly. Which is good as her deadline for completion isn’t far away!
Running the programme has enriched her content. She has stories and case studies. Plus all the material ready to crack on and write it in the next few weeks.
She has tested the content with her delegates, so she knows she has a proven system that works, and she has a group of raving fans who can’t wait to get their hands on a copy.
And many of them are willing to give a peer review to demonstrate to others how valuable her programme has been, which will add a huge amount of social proof in terms of praise in the front of the book.
Of course, you don’t have to write a book and create a course at the same time. But one thing I advise you to do is to see how the two could fit together.
Wouldn’t it be amazing to have a course to launch off the back of your book to maximize your success? Or do what Sarah has done and launch a course before the book?
Imagine the potential to impact more people’s lives…
Make a bigger difference…
And build your business at the same time…
