Why you'll never write your book
So many people have told me that they want to write a book, yet for some reason it doesn’t happen. They don’t schedule the time into their diary, they can’t decide exactly what topic to write about, and their dream of being a published author gets pushed to one side.
That’s why in this week’s blog post, I wanted to share with you five reasons why you’ll never write your book, and easy to follow tips to break through these excuses and get it done!
1. It feels overwhelming
If I suggest that you need to create a manuscript that is 50-80,000 words in length, how does this make you feel? Sure it’s certainly not for the fainthearted. If writing a book was easy, more people would be doing it! But if you don’t know where to start, this is a stumbling block that you’ll never get over. If you can’t see how to break this big task into manageable chunks, it will be a milestone you never reach.
Tip: Start with a plan working back from your launch date mapping out your individual chapters and milestones in between.
2. You can’t make the time
I’m sorry to say that if you’re writing a book, then you have to make it a priority in your life. There’s not much point in saying you’re going to write it if you never make space in the diary to make it happen. Just like you’d make time for marketing your business, you have to schedule in writing time too.
Tip: One of the reasons that clients book onto my regular writing retreats in Spain is to give themselves the gift of time to write it. Just do it!
3. You can’t see the benefits of writing it
Unless you can clearly see the benefits of writing your book, then you’ll never actually do it. It’s more than telling people that you are starting it, it’s about seeing how it can help you to grow your business, reach more people, get more clients, and make a bigger impact.
Tip: My clients have got brilliant PR in the national press even http://healthsavy.com/product/propecia/ before they’ve finished their book, as well as opportunities that they wouldn’t have had without it, like running events and working with clients all over the world. Work out what you want your book to do for you, then you can decide which book you need to write first, that will allow you to achieve this.
4. You don’t understand the book writing and publishing process
That’s where I come in. As an expert in your business, you really don’t need to know everything do you? Actually writing the book will put you in a position of authority, so it makes sense to learn from someone like me to make that part easy, doesn’t it? I’ve already got the expert contacts and experience that enables me to help you.
Tip: It will be quicker and easier if you don’t try and do everything yourself!
5. You don’t know what to write about
I’m sure that if you’re serious about writing a book, you’ve got lots of ideas, concepts and thoughts but you might be struggling to bring them together into a compelling and cohesive structure. You’ve probably got newsletters, articles, blog posts and a plethora of things that you help clients with at the moment. Perhaps you’re also not sure what your clients want to hear from you, or indeed which bit you need to focus on first.
Tip: If this is your struggle, then listen to the recording of the ‘How to write a book that sells’ online masterclass from Thursday 18 June at 12pm BST.
