Thinking about writing a book? Don’t be afraid to start – Cath Lloyd’s story
Cath Lloyd started working with me as her business mentor around four years ago. Then one day she told me about her dream to write a book.
In 2017 she achieved this dream and published When Dad Became Joan: Life with My Transgender Father with Librotas Books.
30 years ago, Cath’s father announced that he wished to become a woman, and her new book is based on her journey of coping with this transition.
It blends her own personal story and also some of the tips that she learnt along the way and now shares as an experienced life coach and stress relief specialist.
Cath Lloyd’s journey as an author
I recently interviewed Cath about her journey as an author and she shared the highs and the lows with me. Certainly writing such a book was challenging and she had to dig deep to develop the courage to share her story. And now it’s out there, she can have open and honest conversations with people about her journey and can impact on more lives than she can do alone.
Her top tips are:
- Get good advice before you get too far with your writing and get yourself a good support network to challenge you and keep you going.
- Be willing to step back from the book and trust other people’s opinions when it comes to the final product.
- Writing and editing the book may take longer than you think but it’s worth spending the time to write a good book.
And here’s her biggest piece of advice. If you’re thinking about writing a book, don’t be afraid to start.

Yes, you definitely need to step back and listen to others opinions. A good developmental editor is worth their weight in gold. especially when you’re starting out.
