Do people love you or hate you?

Do people love you or hate you?

When you put yourself ‘out there’ and become more visible, then two things often happen: People will love you or hate you.  But unless you take that decision to get noticed and make an impact, then no one will be able to make that choice in the first place.

We were discussing this point at Winning Women in Sussex on Tuesday evening, which inspired this blog post. It reminded me of the times when I realised the consequences of being more visible. Here are some of my most vulnerable moments:

  • I delivered training to the sales team in a large Pharmaceutical company and I always remember that one difficult participant rather than 70 who benefited from the workshops.
  • When I wrote my first book, I asked myself ‘who am I to write a book?’ and ‘what are people going to say?’ Then I quickly realised that unless I got over myself, then who else was going to benefit from the wisdom I needed to share.
  • I remember how I felt when I got one poor Amazon review, despite having 24 positive ones.

I’m sure you can recall something similar.  I do wonder why it is much easier to focus on the negatives rather than the positives?! I will say that the power of your mindset will make or break your business, and you do get what you focus on too!

I ask you this:

Unless you become visible, how will you know what response you’ll get?

If you stay small, how will you ever know how many people will love what you do and ask for your help?

Who are you?

With these days of social media, it’s all too easy to share what’s going on for you, or, of course, you could just hover in the background…

So how do you get your message right and reveal the authentic you?

Let’s be honest here.  When you stick your head about the parapet, you are exposed to all sorts of responses, and you’ve got to be comfortable getting uncomfortable.

  • So why not be controversial and see what happens!
  • What’s the worst that can happen when you tell people how you feel or share what you think?
  • What is your key message and who needs to hear it right now?

Who needs you?

One last thought: you don’t have to appeal to everyone.  You’ve just got to reach those people who are your ideal clients. Even then, it’s about touching the hearts of those with whom you have a connection and being able to serve them well.

Well I love it for one! and you’re absolutely right!I am going to call this my ‘marmite moment’. What a loss to the world it would have been if the creators of Marmite had held back – well to at least 50% of the population anyhow – so why should I? Thanks for wise words.

Exactly Jill. In my household, my husband loves marmite and I hate it, and it’s the same with your prospective clients. What a loss to the world if you didn’t stand out in your business! Thank you for commenting.

Great post karen, I love it!

I always remember the words of my first ever mentor Jonathon Jay, when he said to me ‘Allison you cannot please all of the people all of the time ~ start focusing on the difference you want to make and your people will find you’.

    Wise words!

I love it too Karen! Thank you for sharing. This year I am determined to get out and about far more with my business. I have been coaching/mentoring for four years mostly behind closed doors and it’s time to shine to the outside world. It’s a step that’s been waiting to happen and I’m thrilled to have taken it. I’ve just launched Global Winning Women in Inverness so I’m sure this will be a topic of interest to our ladies! Love, Sophia x
