You can’t make money from writing a book – or can you?

In chapter 1 in my sixth book, I talk about how you can’t make money from writing a book. In fact, most people invest hugely. They get coaches, mentors, attend training courses, read books, buy programmes, and many engage a team to help them to publish and promote it.

More often or not, our clients recoup their investment through using their book as a tool to build their authority and credibility.

They upsell to group programmes and 121 services, they create partnerships and collaborations, they win awards, they get media exposure, and attract amazing opportunities that would never have happened without their book. In fact, I’ve listed dozens of things Librotas clients have achieved as a result of writing and publishing their books in my book.

But there is always one exception to the rule and that’s Sally.

Sally Kay was introduced to me around this time last year. She’d already started to write her book, but like many people, she got stuck. She wanted help to finish it. She wanted help to get it published. And she wanted support to enable her to market it effectively.

She wanted her book to leave a legacy, and it is, in her own words, “a labour of love”. And she wanted it to be amazing. So luckily, she came to the right place!

Sally’s book, Reflexology Lymph Drainage is a full colour ‘coffee table’ book for reflexologists who want to learn Sally’s methodology for supporting those with cancer and other inflammatory and auto-immune conditions. Containing well over 200 images, it’s a beautifully illustrated guide.

As you can imagine, a book like this costs a lot to produce and the RRP is £49.99, so you may wonder how many copies Sally has actually sold so far (especially since she only launched the book a couple of weeks ago).

Well let me give you the stats.

When Sally launched her book to her community for pre-orders, she sold 325 copies. That’s 325 copies of her book that she personally signed, beautifully packaged and lovingly posted.

Without a desire to become an Amazon bestseller, she accidentally rocketed to the top of the charts when she sold 591 copies online in June, and we haven’t yet received the e-book sales figures.

So that’s why I lied. Even with the print costs and distribution, she’s had a great result. I’ll leave you to do the maths.

And I lied twice, because most of our client sell their books around the £14.99 mark, and Sally’s book again bucked this trend!

Although the income from book sales certainly wasn’t Sally’s motivation for writing her book, her altruistic vision is to reach more people and spread her message far and wide. But when you have a plan to do this, book sales are automatically going to follow.

And not only has she had a great boost to her launch, her book has reached every single continent of the globe, from Alaska to New Zealand (and people shared photos of their book around the world, including one in Anchorage with the midnight sun behind it).

She’s already having some amazing pieces of feedback. And it’s enabling her to impact more people than she ever could before she wrote her book. It truly has been life changing.
