Being visible on the radio

If you’re writing a book or stepping up in your business, you’ll need to become more visible. I’m sure you’ll be doing it to get noticed by the right people and reach those who need to hear your message. So it’s a good thing, right?

Earlier this week, I was invited to do an interview on Katie Martin’s afternoon show on BBC Radio Solent, as part of the PR for my new book (organised by Helen McCusker from Booked PR).

Although I’ve done radio interviews before, it’s still a daunting process.  Wondering what the presenter will ask me, whether I can answer the questions, or if I’ll forget who I am!

I went armed with a list of questions that I didn’t refer to, but it helped me to remember key facts about my book and what I wanted to say. Plus I really loved that the presenter asked me fresh and new questions that I hadn’t have thought about before, as it can be easy to get stuck in your own stuff!

You can listen to the interview here and I’m on just over 1:08 into the show (just after Hold my Hand by Jess Glynne)!

Of course, being visible in this way is a very positive thing. The presenter is always going to want the best for the show and will put you at ease, like Katie did. They’re not there to trip you up or ask you awkward questions, although if you listen to the interview, there are moments where I talk fast as I didn’t want to forget the question!

The important message is to look out for opportunities like this to promote yourself and don’t be scared to put yourself out there. Although you might wonder how you sound (yup!) or what other people might think (yup!), what will (or won’t happen) if you keep all of your good stuff to yourself? If I inspired just one person in my interview, then I’ve done my job – and based on the Tweets and Facebook messages after the show, it was all good!

If you’re thinking about being visible on the radio, as Helen reminded me last week, go prepared for what you’re talking about, and perhaps make a few key notes about your book or whatever your promoting. And importantly, take a copy of your book if that’s what you’re talking about and make sure you take the time for a photo opportunity like this. Another great PR tip from Helen!
