The 80% is about showing up

Imagine an iceberg. A small piece is visible just above the water. Below the waterline, there is a bigger structure making up the whole. It is likely that 80% of the iceberg is invisible if you were looking from above.

This is the 80% that you need to know about!

An often used metaphor in business, I recently saw this in relation to a book.

The person in question was using it to illustrate her success the number of books sold and the other business benefits of writing it which are visible above the waterline.

Below the waterline the 80% are all of the activities she undertook to achieve this success, such as podcasts, joint ventures, interviews and the like.

It’s all about showing up!

This 80% is something that I’ve been focusing on personally. In September, I decided to show up more in my business and recently totted up my exposure.

In the last seven months, I’ve done…

  • 15 podcast, vodcast and Facebook live interviews
  • 2 radio interviews
  • 4 webinars
  • 3 online summits as a guest speaker
  • 1 guest blog
  • 12 online talks for networking groups

With quite a few others in the pipeline.

That’s 37 pieces of content that now exist because I made the decision to show up.

Now before you panic and wonder how doing this 80% is possible, then I’d like to share my secret with you. The secret of showing up consistently and easily is being on message – which actually is pretty easy when you’ve put together your book…

For all of my interviews, talks and presentations, I talk about my entrepreneurial journey and books.

Why entrepreneurs need to write them…

The benefits of self-funding and self-validating your message…

My 10 Smart Author Principles…

Some of my top tips for planning and writing…

And whatever the interviewer or audience decides to ask me on this topic…

It’s the content I live and breathe every day as a book mentor with my clients.

So I’m never short of stories and anecdotes that illustrate my thoughts and ideas. It doesn’t mean that all the interviews are the same, but there are key things that I share time and time again for the different audiences who listen in.

And the beauty of the online world is that many of these pieces are timeless. People listen to podcast interviews many months or even years after they are published. Talks can be repurposed into blogs and articles. And webinars can be created and run regularly for different audiences. It’s about taking advantage of the right opportunities to share your expertise with current and new audiences, enabling you to show up in a bigger way.

As if to illustrate this point, as I was writing this email, I had a LinkedIn message from someone who connected with me because he had listened to a podcast interview I did last year…

So you never know who may be watching you or listening in, who will be inspired by what you are saying or interested in finding out more, without you needing to be ‘on’ all the time. Enabling you to leverage your expertise.

How will you focus on your 80%?

In last month’s Facebook Live for the Smart Author ‘Community’ members, I shared my tips on showing up plus how to get in front of other people’s audiences via podcasts, vodcasts and interviews like this.
