Author Spotlight interview with Vanessa May

Vanessa May, an executive coach, had dreamt of writing her own book for years. However, she found herself in a pattern of wanting to write, having a million ideas in her head, starting to write and then doing nothing with it.

Then, a pivotal moment arrived. A colleague proudly introduced her newly published book, stirring an unexpected feeling within Vanessa — envy. This emotion prompted a candid self-assessment: she had been postponing her aspirations for too long.

Fuelled by determination, Vanessa took a bold step and approached her colleague for guidance. The ensuing conversation, although uncomfortable, ignited a transformative spark that she couldn't ignore. This colleague happened to be one of my clients, and she told Vanessa about me.

In this Author's Journey interview, Sheryl Andrews interviews Vanessa to find out about her story. And there are many insights around how she found structure, the value of market research, how Vanessa was called forth to step into her thought leadership as a result of writing it - and how it continues to enable her to grow.

  • Some people have to do the research and track patterns to find the structure and others already have the structure in place.
  • How books, the writing process, and promoting it can grow us. And, at times, you feel vulnerable and naked.
  • Why many people often write the book they want to read themselves, and the benefit of taking yourself through your own process.
  • Why it's important to know your ideal reader before you get started, beyond having an avatar.
  • The importance of asking for feedback, but ultimately trusting yourself.
