How writing a book will help you to get clear on your message

Over the last few months, I’ve been rebranding my business and I’ve just revealed the new me under the name of ‘Librotas’. I’ve explored what I do, why it’s important, and the values that I bring to my business.

Although what I do hasn’t changed – helping business owners to write, publish and promote their books – in reality there’s more to it than this, which I explored in last week’s blog post.

I’m not unique on this journey. That question ‘What do you do?‘ flummoxes the most experienced business owners, leaving many a gibbering wreck when it comes to delivering their elevator pitch – even for those who feel they are clear on their message.

When you’re writing a book, it’s even important to get your message right, so that you don’t miss out on the opportunities that writing it can bring you.

I’ve found that getting clear on your message is one of the blockages for many people. Unless you know what you do and what you want to get known for, then it’s hard to start writing.

When I work with clients on this, there are a few avenues we explore and I’d like to give you these questions to think about:

  • What do you do?
  • Who do you do it for?
  • What do you want to get known for?
  • What do your clients get from working with you?

It’s easy to bumble along in a particular field because it’s all you know, or fail to specialise or niche in a specific sector, because making that decision to work with one group of people feels all too scary. But actually if you really want to stand out, then it’s something that you need to do.

So to add to the questions above, it’s important to be really clear how your experience, knowledge or story impacts on your clients, and to go with your heart as well as your head when it comes to getting this clarity.

Many of my clients use their books to clarify what they do, and often they do this with me alongside getting support to write their book. It makes sense to write something that will appeal to your ideal client, thus helping you to build your business.  Ultimately a book is the ideal positioning and credibility building tool.

Getting clear on your message will enable your network and community to really get what you do, rather than you getting lost in the crowd of people who do something similar to you. When others start referring to you as the ‘go to’ person in your field, then business becomes effortless.

It’s also about focusing on that one thing rather than being distracted by bright shiny objects. When you focus on one thing and do it well, then you’re more likely to get the results that you’re looking for.

Then everything you do will flow from this – you’ll have a strong and effective sales funnel, your message will be consistent and your brand will speak for itself. Oh and when you decide to make the leap, you’ll have a book in your hand with your name on it!

What do you think?

I’d love your comments on this blog post.

How did it resonate with you? What actions are you going to take as a result?
