How to create great content for your blogs, videos and podcasts
Last Wednesday I was in the studio shooting some video blogs (so watch this space over the coming weeks) and often my clients ask me how I come up with content. And I’ll be honest with you, when I was planning my scripts; I had to ask myself the same question! Then I gave myself the answer that I give my clients and thought I’d share these tips with you today.
Go narrow and deep into one topic in your blog
My best piece of advice when it comes to writing short pieces of content is togo narrow and deep into one particular topic – ideally a problem that your client is facing, and help them to solve it. Just like this one really. So your problem may be that you struggle to find content for your blog or video post, and I’ll share my tips with you here – simple!
Simple blog posts
But there are various other angles I could have taken, and these would have been good blog posts by themselves, but together they may have appeared confusing or unwieldy. For example, I could have written:
‘5 tips on writing a great blog post’
‘How to get more readers for your blog post’
‘How to get your video blog found online’
These could well become future posts that I share with you!
How to create great content
I recently interviewed Annette Ferguson from Super Accounting who was my October monthly expert for The Business Wow Factor. The topic in question was actually podcasts, as this has been a technique that she has successfully used to build her accountancy http://healthsavy.com/product/viagra/ practice.
One of the tips that Annette shared when coming up for content for podcasts (and can equally be applied to blogs and vlogs) was this:
1. Write down 20 problems that your clients tell you.
2. Write down 20 problems that your clients SHOULD tell you.
So it will take just 20 minutes of brainstorming to come up with numerous ideas for short specific pieces of content that will help your clients – and each will solve one specific problem rather than being too general.
Ultimately you want any piece of writing you do – from your blog to your book – to help your client to solve a problem, although for your book it may be a bigger problem than can be covered in a 500 word blog post or video! However, the process is very similar.
When it comes to sharing your stuff online, it can feel a little daunting. You may ask yourself what people might say, what they might think and what they say about you, but unless you do it, how will you ever know?
