Why speakers need to write a book

When I recently spoke at the Euro Coach List conference, I recognised something important. Many of the speakers at the event had already published a book. And for those who hadn’t… they came along to my workshop ‘Why your Business needs a Book’!

If you missed out on the event, you can download my e-Book where I cover some of these topics. In the meantime, if you want to get more from your speaking engagements…

Here are 5 reasons why speakers need to write a book.

1. You’ll get more speaking gigs

Writing a book will increase your credibility – as long as it is a good book, of course! It will set you aside from others in your profession. It may also lead to some great speaking opportunities that didn’t come your way before you were a published author.

In my new book, ‘Your Book is the Hook’, I’ve included some stories from others who have certainly found this to be the case, as have I. That’s not to say that you won’t get opportunities if you haven’t written a book, but I’ve found that it will help you to stand out.

2. You’ll get clear on what you want to say and who you want to say it to

One of the key things that I’ve found from writing four books is that I’m now clearer on my message and what people want to hear from me when I speak at events.

When you align your talk to your ‘thing’ it makes it more likely that people will later engage your services. You also have the opportunity to share what you do, and how you can help people – as well as give a snippet from your book.

When you are clearer on your audience, you can make sure that you are spending your time speaking to these people, rather than randomly agreeing to every opportunity that you are offered!

3. You can create your signature talk

When you’re clear on what you want to say and your audience, you may choose to develop a signature talk. This has the advantage that you will have a structure that you follow at each speaking event, and you don’t have to keep inventing the wheel.

It will http://healthsavy.com/product/lipitor/ make it easy to agree last minute speaking engagements, without worrying about producing new content or having to do something different each time.  People will get to know you for this expertise and want you to share this with their community.

4. People can get to know you before you speak

When you are a published author, you may find that people will get to know you before you speak. I’ve had this on numerous occasions when people have sought me out at events, and asked me to sign their copy of one of my books. On one occasion, it was lovely to be quoted by an audience member who had already read my first book (and incidentally later became a client and has now written a book too!)

5. It will help you to get more clients

If you are able to sell your book at events, it will help you to turn people who are interested in your talk into actual paying clients, and you may find that some of these decide to work with you on a one-to-one basis.   Unless you are speaking at large-scale speak to sell events (where you’ll probably have a product to sell anyway), a book is a low-cost way for people to get to know you further.

Are people more likely to remember you if your book is on their book shelf or if you are a memory of someone who spoke at an event?
