Why you need to share your best stuff in your book
I was recently asked this question: “Why on earth would I share everything I know in my book? If I give away my best stuff, surely I’ll be giving away the crown jewels, and then no one will ever need to work with me.”
It’s an interesting one isn’t it? A book is a great positioning tool, yet you want to use it to build your business, so it needs to generate clients.
The thing about writing a book is that you don’t need to reinvent the wheel. You have all the knowledge and content for the book already and it’s just about sharing it.
But unfortunately unless you’re really well known, it’s unlikely you’ll retire on the proceeds of your book sales!
Here’s my take on it.
When you share your best stuff in your book you will get noticed. Your readers will think ‘well if he or she gives all of this information for the price of a book, how will it be if I work with them further?’
But it’s not just that.
You see there is only so much you can do with your book. You can sow the seed, you can encourage action, but it doesn’t mean that your reader will do something with what they’ve learnt. Some will leave it on their shelf gathering dust until the time is right. But then at least it will be on their shelf to read, when they could have just forgotten who you are and never find you again!
But don’t let that put you off as there will be many people who read your book and do something with it, and isn’t that great that you’ve inspired them to do so?
And some of these readers will need your help to implement what you teach, coach or train. This will ensure that they can make your wisdom work for them in practice, keep them accountable, and help them to achieve their objectives and goals.
That’s where you come in.
Take writing a book for example. My third book Your Book is the Hook is my best stuff.
It takes you through the 6 step process of writing a book from idea to publication. It gives you a choice buy alprazolam online of ways to plan your book, the pros and cons of different publishing methods, and dozens of way to use it as a marketing tool.
In the book I’m telling my readers what to do but I can’t tell them how it will work for them. If you think about it, every book that is written is unique with different audiences, different ways of reaching these readers and different types of information that is shared.
In a book, I can’t talk with people individually and sift through their ideas to find the right book that they need to write. I can’t help them to structure their book in a logical order, and I can’t give them a personalised marketing plan to use to get them and their book noticed.
Those who know they can’t do it by themselves will come and work with me, and the others might spend a lot of time and energy trying to figure it out on their own.
But importantly if I hadn’t written the book and been on message with everything I’m saying, then these people wouldn’t know I exist and it wouldn’t be easy for people to refer others to me.
If I hadn’t written the book, I wouldn’t have been approached for amazing speaking opportunities, and be working with clients all around the globe.
If I hadn’t written my books, then people wouldn’t hear my message and know that they need my support.
And the same applies to you.
Your book is more than an expensive business card.
It’s a great way to inspire your clients, get in front of the right people, and position you as an expert. Need I go on?
That’s why you need to share your best stuff in your book!

Thank you Karen, you have explained very succinctly why 1:1 works, rather than reading a book. I found this post vey helpful.
Thanks for your comment Maureen. I think that books are brilliant introductory tools, and when people take action, they work. But there is something special about getting one to one support on a specific project when you want to get great results.
